Hello!

This thread was named in honor of Diane Farr's stint on the show "Rescue Me!"

This is where you will find ideas for words and hints on plots/storylines. You can ask for a beta or just ask for sympathy.

Starting with the word ideas, there are several sites that have lists of unusual words. (Particularly helpful for those of you who find yourselves staring down

Here are some words that are no longer in use:
Lost Words (http://phrontistery.info/clw.html)

Here's a list of interesting words:
International House of Logorrhea (http://phrontistery.info/ihlstart.html)

This is a search engine that links to many on-line dictionaries:
One Look (http://www.onelook.com/)
This is especially useful because you can look up Scrabble style. (That is, you can pick certain letters that you want to use, like Z*X, and One Look will find words that fit that format.)

And here's a random word (http://www.zokutou.co.uk/randomword/) generator

I was thinking Jels--it would be helpful to know which titles were used last year...that we don't accidently use them again.

One quick question:

When Don was SAC in Albuquequeue (Man, that's worse than Mississippi..ok maybe equal), was he just in charge of over-seeing everybody else or did he do field work too, do you think? And in which year would it approx. be?
And while Don there, where was Charlie? Had he come back from England?

I know they haven't techinically revealed all this, but if you guys could just give me your opinions on what you think might be, it'd be a great help

Happy writing everyone!

Happy writing everyone!

I'd say that Albuquerque is worse than Mississippi, myself.

Let's see. In First Season's "Counterfeit Reality" Kim said something along the lines of it having been "three years" since Don had left New Mexico (MUCH easier to spell ;)) Since the show is basically set in real time, I'd call that around 1992.

I'm not sure if Don would have been a field agent, but I really can't see him being happy with a job that was 100% desk work. My guess is that his job there was basically what it is currently.

In "All's Fair", I believe it was stated that Charlie lived with Susan when he was 20. In one of the first season episodes, mention was made of Charlie being "almost 30" (which I interpreted as meaning 29.)

That means (by my math) Charlie would have been around 26 when Don returned from NM. (The spelling can't get easier than that! :D)

Since there are indications that Charlie has been in Pasadena for several years (In the first season, it was stated that Amita had been his grad student for 2 years), I'd say that Charlie was in Pasadena when Don transferred to LA.

Does anyone remember a scene between Don and Dr. Bradford where Dr. Bradford makes a comment along the lines of "Oh, you'd be surprised what I know."

I think it was in reference to shooting Crystal Hoyle, but I'm not sure. Was this in One Hour, or Take Out?

Hey

Very sure of my answer. It's in One Hour, when Don is talking about how David is the type to just quit one day, and listing a few reasons why and Bradford says ''Like the day you sent Ian Edgerton in to work over a suspect'' and the line you're referring to is ''You'd be surprised with what I know and how I know it''.

Hope that helps. Have fun writing.

*blinks innocently* Whatever are you talking about Kristen? Me? Snagging your book? ;) [And what are the chances we go to the same local library?...]

No. It's okay, you can have it. What I have (or more accurately, had until this morning) is a pile of federal employment books, including one very useful one that listed all federal jobs with qualifications and an actual explanation of what the positions are. I really liked one by Thomas H. Ackerman. It's big, yellow, weighs just slightly less than our yellow pages, and is called Federal Law Enforcement Careers. And now you're probably going to go get it, and I'll have to muddle through with my notes. Ah well. :) *giggles*

I do go and find the book on Tuesday. It was in the reference section and had a big orange sticky that said “USE IN LIBRARY” so I didn’t check it out and instead browsed through it for an hour or so instead of trying to bribe a librarian to let me check it out. There was lots of stuff about the FBI’s history in it. I’d recommend it if you want indepth info about the FBI's history. The book is a bit dated so there isn't any info for stuff after 1997 or so.

There was a brief section about those who were arrested for espionage/treason. Richard W. Miller was the first FBI agent to hold the distinction. I didn’t look very deeply, but I can see a bit of a parallel with Dwayne in him.

There was also a section about how the FBI was used in popular culture where it mentioned the X-Files. I certainly hope the next edition mentions Numb3rs. :)

Hummm…I should just copy your notes like a bad student instead of going to the trouble of checking it out myself.

DreamBrother,

I love classic rock (I have the Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Bob Dylan, CSNY, The Eagles, Elton John, ELP, Foreigner, James Taylor, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Foreigner, Styx, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, The Mamas and The Papas, Neil Young, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Wings, Peter Frampton, The Police, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Traffic, U2, Van Halen, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and ZZ Top on my iPod ... I love classic rock and I'm 17!). :D (Okay, and I have some "modern" stuff on there, like Avril Lavigne, Dane Cook, Brian Regan, and The White Stripes)

Anywho, I'm writing a NUMB3RS fanfic (with some of my own characters thrown in) over the summer, and hopefully can get it on here eventually.

Happy writing and researching everybody!

I'd like to add something in case you are interested about the FBI.

It was a 60 minutre documentary from national Geographic. I rented through netflicks. It was well done. Gave you a little glimps into things about them/ Here is the summary from netflicks. Not real indepth but still talked about the history of the FBI till about 2002.

With worries about the state of our national security increasing almost every day, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has been under more intense scrutiny than ever. This penetrating documentary offers high-security access behind the scenes at the FBI and offers insights as to how the Bureau operates.

It is voiced by Dennis Haysbert

Nothing wrong with Charlie whumping? Hm, the rational and responisble part of my brain wants to disagree.

It's been outvoted.

Anyway, how about some volunteers to take the Q? There are lots of cool Q words! I'll quote myself from last year's challenge.

Speaking of Q words, there are some perfectly good Q words that would work for a Numb3rs story.

Quiz: Feds quiz people and Professors give quizzes. Or somebody could feel quizzical.

** Edited to add - I see that 'Quiz' has been used, but 'Quizzical' is a great word! **

Question was used (**in the first challenge), but query is another way of asking. It's also a way of getting information out of a computer. Or you could write about somebody who asks asks questions... a querent.

Quotient is the answer to a division problem, and would make a good title for a story about a mathematical mystery.

Quirky describes Larry very well. Quotidian doesn’t describe Larry, but it’s a word he might well use.

Most colleges have an open area called a "Quad". Not to mention "quad" is a perfectly good prefix (relating to the number four) and is used in many scientific words => quadrangle (four angles, from whence "Quad" gets its name), quadraped (four legged), quadrillion (which IS a number), quadratic equation (who could forget that one?)

"Quint" is another numerical term indicating "five"

Plus there are everyday words: quart, quartz, queen, queer, quack, quick, quickly, quiet was used last time, but there's still quietly, quality, quantity, qualm, quip

There are also proper names:
Qui-Gon Jinn, anybody?
Quiznos sandwiches?
Qatar is a country in the Middle East
Querétaro de Arteaga and Quintana Roo are states in Mexico.
Quito is a city in Ecuador

Don't forget:

quixotic - unrealistic idealism
quahog - a type of clam
quagga - an extinct animal related to the zebra
QWERTY - your keyboard arrangement!
querida - a Spanish endearment

For more Q words...

Your Dictionary dot com (http://www.yourdictionary.com/ahd/browse/66.html#q)

Unusual Q Words (http://phrontistery.info/q.html)

These were last year's "Q" stories.

Quarry
Quiet
Questions
Quiet Time
Quandry
Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes? (Who guards the guardians? Latin quotes are great for the Q)
Quidnuncs (Another word from Latin, it means 'busybodies'. This is a funny David and Colby story if you're still depressed over the season ender.)
Quake
Quiet Reflections
Quiz
Quietude
Quantum Physics
Quivering
Quarter of Three

I have two ideas as to how to start the fic, but I'm not sure yet what the best one is.

Was it Under Pressure? LadyShelley's RedHawke site lists lost of the math and the episodes. Although the direct "All the Math" section doesn't say what episode the math was used in, the "Episode Guide" area lists it in the "Related Items" box.

A site that lists the math in each episode would be cool. I don't know of one, but I'll keep an eye out.

Meanwhile, I think the episode that you're looking for is Seaon Two's "Protest."

If anyone else is interested I went back to haunt the library and found a book called "Interviewing and Interogation" by Don Rabon. From a writing perspective it is cool to read some of the transcripts. Amazing how you can read so much into a single word, phrase, or posture. I love dialogue!

Protest! Yes, that's it! Thanks.

It was quite frustrating, I could see Charlie and Amita sitting outside and talking and, while Charlie was speaking, seeing the camera zoom in on people and chalk lines connecting friends, romances and unlikely connections but I couldn't remember the episode!

As for such a site, I'm really hoping it eventually appears. In the Harry Potter fandom there is a site called the Lexicon and it lists absolutely everything from the series, all the people ever mentioned, all the potions/spells/charms/ingredients/place/animals/books/titles... in all of the books along with all the information Rowling has ever given in interviews. It's a fan fic author's dream.

Have you written the story and you're just looking for a title?

I have a couple of tricks I use when I'm looking for inspiration. First, I go to redhawke.org, click on "ruinning the numb3rs" and then on "all the math" Then I look at the alphabetical list of math terms and see if anything helps.

If that doesn't help, I take a piece of paper and just start writing all the words I can think of that start with the letter. If that doesn't work, I just start going through a dictionary.

If that doesn't help, I just let it simmer for a while. Eventually, inspiration will hit.

You're looking for an o?

O is for Oops? Osmosis.. Orville-Redenbach (popcorn is on my mind)...Opportunity..Opulent (King Lear time)...Othello... I should really be able to come up with more O words.

What works for me, especially inspiration, is song titles. Like, just a word from the title will send off in a direction, even if it's nothing relevant to the song.

Let's say he did his under-grad at Princeton, post-grad somewhere else, maybe CalSci, so now he'd be 20ish. He was living with Susan at 21 for 2 years.

After all, I think the man who solved Fermat's Enigma also teachers at Cambridge... or Oxford *ducks* so it's entirely possible Charlie went there to teach/research for a project. It could be also how he encountered Susan, as a fellow colleague.

According to All's Fair, Charlie has a ''standing invitation'' to lecture at Cambridge. Does that mean he's been there before for stuff?

And where in the world did Oxford come into my head from, then? Must be the peeve that these 2 uni's have such big egos that on the UCAS application, if you pick one, you can't also pick the other. Why? Because they don't want to be second in line to the other. Urgh! from a student's perspective.

Thanks for the help guys! Cambridge it is and to... do research. What's a better place to come up with the Eppes Convergence in than the old old beautiful buildings of Cambridge? Sorry Oxford.

I have a vague impression that somebody said that Charlie had graduated from college when he was 16, but I could be wrong.

I never had a "junior" year. When I transferred from junior college, I had too many credits and was listed as a senior. Maybe Charlie never had a "freshmen" year. He might have already had enough college credits by then to skip that.

I don't suppose Don would have cared much at that point. He and Charlie weren't in the same school, so it wasn't as bad as having him graduate at the same time.

If I posted a story about a fedcake getting held hostage by a rapist (not getting raped), would that be considered PG-13? Or should I just link to it?

As far as I can tell, if there's no rape (or other sex) depicted in the story, it can be rated PG.

I think you'd be pretty safe posting it, m_r.

The house of Eppes is in Pasadena, yes?

Whereabouts in the city is it likely to be, given that it's historic and all that? Is there a particular neighbourhood with those sort of houses? And how far would they be from, say, CalSci and the Rose Bowl?

The Eppes' Craftsman is in Pasadena, yes.

Pasadena has lots of lovely old houses, I don't think there's any one area where they are.

CalSci is the Numb3rs-verse version of CalTech, so you can use CalTech's locations to approximate anything you need to know about CalSci. (Cal Tech is about five miles from the Rose Bowl.)

I was under the impression that Charlie rode his bike to school, so I expect that the Eppes Craftsman is five miles or less from CalTech.

So no-one's going to pop up and say, No Craftman houses within three miles of CalTech/Sci? Oh, good.

Oh help, I'm back again.

Is Amita an only child?

And, do we know where she did her undergraduate degree?

(Incidentally, why is Charlie her thesis advisor when she's doing a PhD in s1? I was under the impression that in America you did a dissertation for a PhD and a thesis for a Master, although over here it's the exact opposite: thesis for PhD, dissertation for Masters or the Honours component of a Bachelor's.)
