View Full Version : Alert for FanFiction.net Writers!

If you post your fic on FanFiction.net I urge you to go check your fic ratings now.
They recently switched from the MPAA ratings system to their own Fiction Ratings system and evidently they misrated three of my fic and as a result removed them from the site. Now I have only 17 up there versus my previous 20 (which I was quite proud of) and have lost all the reviews attached to those fic as well (the worst part of all this!)
I'd understand if they were high R or something but they were booted for being K+ fic that honestly were fine as K+ fic but would not have been bad as Ts either.
They are basically restricting people who get these alerts and threatening to ban them later. All for something they brought on themselves.
I'm seriously annoyed with them but wanted to send out an alert to people who didn't check their new ratings for existing fic under the new system lest your fic and reviews get deleted as well.
Fair warning...
Best,
M.

Hey M,
I'm kinda new to this (as you know). What are K and T ratings? I always thought we were using movie ratings (G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17). I don't get the rest of these.
I don't know how much it matters. I've stopped posting on fanfiction.net altogether and actually deleted my last two stories. It has turned into an incest-site and that's not me!

This is why I've nevered bothered with posting stories at ff.net, they've managed to do things like this on a regular basis.
Leaptad, they used to use regular ratings, but the MPAA has started issuing cease and desist orders to fanfic writers for violating their copyright, blah, blah, blah. (And the MPAA wonders *why* no one on the 'net is sympathtic to their problems?) <Sorry, rant there>
M, I'm sorry to hear you've lost your feedback for those stories, is there anyway you can pull them up using the Wayback Machine?

...You just dated yourself LadyShelley :) I know what a Wayback Machine is...but I wonder if some of our younger posters are scratching their heads....
Anyway, can anyone give me a list of the new ratings? Is it on the net somewhere?

Okay...I'm not a younger poster, and *I* don't know what Wayback Machine is. Sounds kinky.

Sorry, no such luck. The Wayback Machine is a site that basically archives the internet:
http://www.archive.org/
Very handy for fic sites that disappear.

I like it alot. It has some really good stories. I am sorry to hear about the stories getting taken off. I love your fanfiction on fanfiction.net. I hope you don't stop posting there. I haven't seen any incest fics on ff, well, there is one for Numbers, but I asked ff to take it off. I don't know if they did or not. And also, my favorite Harry Potter writer got her fic taken off, too. I hate how ff never gives a story a chance after it has been misread or something, but I read there becuase they have a whole lotta good stories for Harry Potter especially that I can't find anywhere else. Sorry for typing so much. I am really hyper. :)

To Lilla and Leaptad:
I have seen incest fic on FF.net but it's always seemed to be removed fairly promptly. IMHO, incest fic is an automatic NC-17 (MA in the new system) as I believe that's something no child should be exposed to. It's unhealthy. MA fic is not allowed on FF.net and I'm fine with that. My fic got bounced supposedly for being rated K+ and I'm guessing they were supposed to be T even though there is nothing bad in them (one has two basic kisses in it - how is that not PG?)
To LadyShelley:
I haven't lost too much since I've been contacting any reviewers (who have email addresses listed) as soon as they post the review and I've been having them emailed to me but still... It's inconvenient and just plain wrong to put me through this annoyance and insult.
To Lilla:
I'm not sure if the comment about "I love your fanfiction" was meant for me but if it was thank you and please email me directly for a nice little cookie. Leaptad and LadyShelley will vouch for me... I give out nice cookies. :-)
To All:
Here's the url for the new Fiction Ratings system.

Interesting. They seem to have taken down a story I wrote about a character caught in a cave-in with his family trying to rescue him, but left on two other stories about how the horrors of the Civil War haunt the same man. They rated the Civil War stories as K (5 years old and older) and K+ (9 years old and older), even though both contain what I would have called graphic scenes of war. Maybe I'll try posting the cave-in story again, rate it myself, and see what happens <G>

I just spent way too long looking up some of my old websites. Some of the designs were really good - not sure why I ever changed. :?
