Just An Ordinary Hero
part 4
By the time Colby arrived back at the house, he saw that the picnic table was already set and both mother and daughter were waiting. Taking a seat, he accepted the glass of lemonade from Merrilee and sat back to enjoy the meal.
"Thank you for joining us for lunch, Colby," Kathleen said as ahe filled his plate with a couple of sandwiches and potato salad. "You must be thinking it odd that we'd choose to spend today of all days with someone we barely know."
"I will admit that the thought did cross my mind. But I think I can undertstand. When one of my Army buddies was killed, his widow started spending days like today with other people. In the past it had just been the two of them. She just couldn't stand being alone anymore," the young man replied.
"You know, Colby, I think you really would have liked Micheal. And I know he would've liked knowing you. You both have a lot in common. you're both kind and I'd say certainly brave to be an FBI agent. Micheal was killed in Iraq nine months ago," Kathleen said softly.
"I truly am sorry for your loss. I spent a tour of duty in Afghanistan myself befored I joined the FBI. I guess you could say that I'm one of the lucky ones since Imade it back home in one piece.," Colby told her.
She smiled slightly and said, "I guess you could say that. But we're very glad that you are. Please enjoy your lunch and we can talk some more later unless you're in a hurry to leave."
"The only plans I have are for doing laundry and that can wait until later," he replied.
"Good. I made peach cobbler. Actually, it's left over from last night. But its still good heated up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream."
"Homemade vanilla ice cream," Merrilee spoke up.
"Homemade ice cream. Now that is my favorite kind. Back in Idaho my Grandma Granger used to make it every summer. She had this special recipe for an ice cream that tasted exactly like snickers bars," Colby said enthusiastically.
"Sounds like it tastes good. I'll have to see if I can find it on the recipesearch website," Kathleen said thoughtfully.
"If you want I could ask my grandmother to send it to me. I know she'll do anything for her favorite grandchild," Colby offered.
"I would like that very much," the young woman replied.
"Me too," Merrilee added.
Colby laughed and said, "I'll be sure and get that recipe."
They finished their meal in an easy companionable silence . Finally Kathleen got to her feet and announced, "Time for dessert."
"Need any help?" he asked.
"No. I've got it. Just sit back and enjoy yourself," she replied as she headed for the house.
Left alone with the little girl, he asked, "Did you pick all these flowers yourself?"
"Uh huh," she answered.
"Dessert is served," Kathleen said as she returned shortly carrying a tray with three plates on it. "I hope you'll enjoy this."
"oh, I'm certain I will," Colby assured her and took one of the dishes.
Kathleen passed one to Merrilee and sat down with her own. "Now don't get me wrong but I'm not angry that Micheal died. He loved serving his country and and felt dying for it was his greatest sacrafice," she said. "But he didn't go over there planning to get killed either. It was roadside bomb. THey tell he that he and his unit were providing security escort for a medical convoy when it happened. I hold onto the fact that he died doing what he loved and that we loved him." She smiled slightly and began to eat her dessert.
"How long have you been here in L.A.?" Colby asked.
"Four months. Merrilee will be in school soon and I'll be starting a job then. We've been spending the summer settling in and getting to know the city," Kathleen answered.
"Well, L.A. can be a pretty scary place if you don't know your way around. Look, would it be okay if I gave you my number so you could call me. Just in case of emergency you know. And you could let me have yours. Just so I could make sure you're okay," he suggested.
"Well, all right. I don't usually give out our number but I feel that I can trust you," Kathleen answered.
"I'll give you my card. It has my cell on it and I can be reached there pretty much 24/7," Colby said as he reached for his wallet and withdrew an FBI business card.
"Thank you," Kathleen said and slipped it in her shirt pocket. "I'll give you ours in a few minutes."
"Take your time. I'm too busy enjoying this great ice cream," he replied, giving them both a grin.
