Man, I loved this episode. So many great quotes. I'll edit in my take on it after the West coast has had a chance to see it later.
Loved the whole "Smokey and the Bandit" theme of the show with Randy's quest to get to the fair. It's Bear-rific!...lol small town fairs probably not far off with that theme either, Randy seemed to like it anyway.
This ep featured "David" from Roseanne fame. He played "Scott" the golfer who Earl and Randy figured out if they rigged his golf game to where he gets a whole in one each time ...they get free beers if in the clubhouse at the right time. They also have to get him his job back, his girlfriend, and his dog!
My fav scene was them doing the "Say Anything" spoof with the boom box. The fire of burning golf clubs was hilarious indeed. It was like something you'de see in a Cartoon and I loved it! Comedy Gold.
Fav Quotes~(at the Apartment)
Randy: "It's like Disneyland for poor people. They got a Ferris Wheel, Bumper Boats, bands you thought were dead; last year they had the worlds tallest midget!"
(After learning Earl and Randy had been the cause of his misfortune)
Scott: "I had a Tendon from my thigh put into my arm to try to get more release from my drives!"
And Tess's admitting "sorta" being with another guy lol...although very awkward; was hilarious. (We later learn it was at Ozzfest!)
Great for Randy to save the day again albeit in another strange manner, his usual disappearing act and turning up with " Poochie" the dog while Earl was worried sick about him being in the hospital or dead. Still a great ending with Earl renting the Bandit Car for the day for Randy's sorta "reward". And Earl added #260 - "Neglected Randy". To remind him never to do it again.
Great ep , another one of my favs...although I love every ep.

On last nights show Randy caught the bus to Hagerstown and another town was mentioned. I live close to two towns with the same names and was wondering, Where does Earl live?

I relate to Earl so much because I was raised in a small town in lower income conditions. This episode just brought it even more home. We had the State Fair---like they said "Disneyland for poor folks". We lived for the funnel cakes and crappy rides. It was a thrill for us! We even had little "carnivals" that came from town to town. You really do put your life in danger letting those carnies have control over those rickety rides.
I agree wholeheartedly about the Smokey & The Bandit reference. Alot of us "poor white trash" come from trucking families. Everybody on my daddies side, even some of the women, are truck drivers. So you know we have a huge connection to Smokey and the Bandit. It's just part of poor white trash culture!
I am really enamoured by Randy's character. He is so sweet and benign. This episode just further enhanced his naive, tender nature. He is a good straight man for Earl.

I thought I read somewhere that it is based in California. It might just be coincidence though that real towns may be mentioned. I think it's just a fictional town they are living in. It's meant to be out in the rural or suburbs/ outskirts of major cities like Los Angeles. I like to see this side of California myself rather than just the glamourous parts all the time. I believe it is also filmed in California, unlike a show like Northern Exposure was filmed in Oregon, or maybe it was Washington ??, when the show was based in Alaska. The movie Halloween wasn't filmed in Illinois either although it was supposed to be set there.

Yeah, over the summer I got excited because at a Single A ballpark nearby, the General Lee (Dukes of Hazzard Car) was on display for the night. And I do love the smell of a small town Carnival or Fair. REO Speedwagon or Styx usually plays there for half the price of what some of today's acts charge you. I love the Scrambler and the Tilt O Whirl also!

DANG! The Dukes of Hazzard Car! That would definately be a hit around here.
My daddy had a 69 Plymouth Roadrunner that was that same color as the Dukes of Hazzard car. The body shape was very close to the DOH car and it was always the point of envy everywhere we went. We lived in rural North Carolina...so you know that car got the people excited. Man, I miss that car!
What is it about rednecks and old cars?
Anyway....ROTFL at the reference to Styx and the Scrambler...that is definately a carnival in our area!

I believe the other town mentioned was Frederick (the bus ride back and forth). I assumed the show is filmed in CA. There is a Hagerstown and a Frederick in northwestern Maryland. Just coincidence I guess….
I'm just wondering why they made mention of these towns. Maybe someone working on the show (a writer maybe) is from Maryland.
I'll do some mapquesting and see if there is a Hagerstown and Frederick in CA.

Gordy:
The other town mentioned was Cumberland, MD. Garcia is a Frostburg State Grad ('91) and grew up in N VA. I'm sure he ment the MD towns, although I believe the setting is suppose to be CA.
These are towns you pass on the way to frostburg and they have "country" style county fairs.
